Courts report significant uptake in digital technology usage amid coronavirus (COVID-19)

HM Courts & Tribunals Service (HMCTS) has released data on the usage of audio and video technology by individual courts and tribunals. The figures show a significant increase in the use of such technologies between 19 March and 6 April 2020, due, in large part, to the outbreak of coronavirus (COVID-19). Indeed, during the aforementioned period, courts and tribunals reported that the use of audio hearings increased from around 100 to 1,850, and video hearings increased from 150 to 1,100. Though the data indicates a sharp rise in the number of hearings making use of digital technology, HMCTS has advised that the data be interpreted with caution, particularly because the figures were drawn together quickly and are based on operational reports from individual courts and tribunals during a period of intense urgent activity.
