Coronavirus (COVID-19)—more support required for carers as winter approache

Carers UK has launched a campaign calling for the government to take more action to support carers amid coronavirus (COVID-19). As part of its campaign, Carers UK is asking for individuals to write to their local MP to share their personal experiences of caring during the pandemic. Carers UK is calling for the government to implement short, medium and long-term measures including the prioritising of essential services, supporting carers health and wellbeing and providing sufficient funding for carers during the winter.

Carers UK is calling for the following measure to be offered to carers:

Short term

• ensure carers can take breaks

• provide clear guidance, information, and advice specifically for carers

• raise the level of Carer’s Allowance

• support carers’ to look after their own health and wellbeing, and include funding for mental health support

• ensure that carers are better able to juggle work and care and remain in work

• provide sufficient funding for social care over the winter

Medium term

• implement a New Deal for Carers, with medium term tangible action to the benefit carers and those they care for

Long term

• ensure carers are at the centre of a reformed and sustainable social care system

• ensure that the support given is available to both those giving and receiving care
