Coronavirus (COVID-19)—DHSC announces surge testing in Sandwell and Birmingham

The Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) has announced that additional surge testing is to be deployed in Sandwell and Birmingham, after a confirmed case of the South African coronavirus (COVID-19) variant was identified. NHS Test and Trace is targeting areas within the B66 3, B66 4 and B67 6 postcodes in Smethwick/Cape Hill, Sandwell and Ladywood, as well as the Jewellery Quarter and Soho wards in Birmingham. All individuals, aged 16 and older in the area are urged to take a coronavirus PCR test, whether they are showing symptoms or not and should ‘continue using twice-weekly rapid testing alongside the PCR test as part of surge testing’.

The DHSC has said that individuals suffering from coronavirus symptoms should book a free test online or by phone, and those without symptoms should visit the local authority website for further information.
