Coronavirus (COVID-19)—Commission begins media and audiovisual sector recovery

The European Commission has adopted an Action Plan for the benefit of the media and audiovisual sector, hoping to improve its recovery and accelerate its transformation out of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, from which it was particularly hit. The Commission regards the sector as ‘essential for democracy, Europe’s cultural diversity and digital autonomy’, and is enabling its recovery through three key areas, enveloping ten ‘concrete actions’ to facilitate it.

As part of the ‘Recover’ stage, the Commission outlines the following actions:

  • facilitate access to EU support
  • boost investment in the audiovisual industry
  • launch a 'NEWS' initiative to bundle actions and support

The Commission seeks to engage with the following actions as part of its Recover stage:

  • encourage European media data spaces
  • foster a European Virtual and Augmented Reality industrial coalition
  • facilitate discussions and actions for the industry to become climate neutral

To 'Enable and Empower’ the sector, the Commission has outlined the four following key actions:

  • launch a dialogue with the AV industry
  • foster European media talents
  • empower citizens
  • strengthen cooperation among regulators
