Coronavirus (COVID-19)—Ofqual Chair comments on grading of 2020 examinations

The Chair of Ofqual, Roger Taylor, has issued a statement on the grading of GCSE, AS, A level, Extended Project Qualification and Advanced Extension Award in maths in the summer of 2020. Acknowledging that recent events have been a ‘distressing time for students’, Taylor said ‘We want to now take steps to remove as much stress and uncertainty for young people as possible’. Ofqual has now decided to awarded students their centre assessment grade. This will be either the school or college estimated grade, which the student was likely to achieve in the exam, or the moderated grade, whichever is higher. Ofqual apologises for the anguish caused and the damage to public confidence as a result of their original approach to this issue. Ofqual is now working with the Department for Education, universities and affected stakeholders to implement this measure and provide urgent clarity.
