Coronavirus (COVID-19)—CIEH warns against replacing Public Health England

The Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH) has responded to media reports that the Health Secretary, Matt Hancock, will replace Public Health England (PHE) with a pandemic focused unit, warning that this will not solve the issues in combatting coronavirus (COVID-19). Executive Director of Membership and External Affairs at CIEH, Debbie Wood, has said ‘focussing on sweeping organisational change when we are still in the middle of a pandemic is questionable, and we would urge the UK Government to instead put its resources into addressing the situation on the ground. Test and trace needs improving, and local authorities and public health teams need better support.’ Wood observed that ‘a mistake frequently made throughout this pandemic has been to follow an overly centralised approach, instead of utilising localised skills and knowledge already held within environmental and public health teams'. Wood urges the government to be clear about its role and responsibilities in managing the pandemic and warns against being distracted by the possible replacement of PHE.
