Axxia Systems: Case study
Unlocking growth through technology
We talk to Ringrose Law's chief executive, Ed Moss, about how Axxia solutions have helped the conveyancing specialist achieve impressive growth and a national profile.
When Ed Moss first joined Ringrose Law as chief executive, he faced a number of immediate and longer term challenges. One priority was to forge a fully integrated partnership in the wake of two mergers. Another was to secure double digit growth through the expansion of the firm's conveyancing business.
Fundamental to the achievement of both was a new approach to IT with the adoption of more sophisticated technology and fee earner tools that would drive connectivity, communication, efficiency and productivity. It would enable them to put a degree of process across the organisation as well as deliver a step-change in the capacity of its conveyancing department. And at the heart of the new system was Axxia's case management solution.
Ed Moss is clear about its role in the success of Ringrose Law:
"I don't think it's too much of an exaggeration to say that we would not have been able to get so far so quickly without Axxia technology. But I think we were able to get the most out of it because we chose not to stop at the 'out of the box' solution; instead we invested heavily in our internal IT resources and our developers worked closely with our fee earners to develop workflows and methodologies that would underpin fast, professional, cost-effective handling of volume conveyancing.
Since Case's inception in 2003, we have been able to continually refine our proposition and this has paid off handsomely through our elevation from the regional to the national panel of LMS and our selection for the Live regional panel."
The firm's pragmatic approach to IT ensured that the electronic gateway required by LMS was soon established through the deployment of e-Tran. "We've always approached IT with an enabling mindset - just how far can we go with the tools available. For us, it's never just been about 'keeping the lights on' - it's about creating added value for the long-term."
The figures speak for themselves. Ringrose are set to achieve 200% growth in conveyancing fees alone in a little over five years; three offices have become five, the fifth a £1.5 million investment in a dedicated operations centre; and the firm itself has grown from 70 staff and 10 partners to 180 staff and 19 partners over the same timeframe. But Ringrose are far from being a one trick pony.
"We see publicly funded work as a huge opportunity"
Explains Ed Moss: "Our strategy is threefold: grow bulk conveyancing, develop publicly funded work and support organic growth across the remaining departments.
We see publicly funded work as a huge opportunity because so many people are pulling out of the market; we're confident that we can be profitable because, as with conveyancing, we have put process and workflow into that team. When you have that level of control, you know exactly what you can deliver at what cost. Whoever said you couldn't commoditise this type of work, well, they are very welcome to come and visit."
Ringrose certainly impresses with its corporate credentials. There are well-defined operational standards alongside Lexcel accreditation; a strong brand with core values ; a CRM referrals and cross-selling initiative that involves and rewards the whole staff; optimum staff ratios; firm-wide KPIs; and an overall approach that says 'business' not 'practice'.
And like all good businesses, Ed and his senior colleagues are already looking ahead - this time to a probable dna* future. "We've seen dna* and my developers can't wait to get their hands on it. It will give them the rapid application development environment they've always wanted and the firm the opportunity to get to market much more quickly with new or enhanced offerings. Because workflow creation will be so fast and straightforward, it will give us an agility and responsiveness, a dynamism even, that will allow us to deliver ideas almost as soon as we think of them. In a market that's only going to get more intensely competitive, that's a good skill to have."
