How does Reed handle cookies?
What are cookies?
Cookies are small items of text that are stored on your machine by your web browser in accordance with instructions from a web site. When you visit a web site, the site may ask your web browser to retrieve any cookie the site created. Cookies are comprised of a variable name (e.g. Full_Name), a value (e.g. Joe Bloggs) and an expiry date. Cookie values may be encrypted for security purposes. Web browsers enable two types of cookie to be stored on your computer: Session and persistent cookies.
What is a session cookie / persistent cookie?
Session cookies last only as long as the web browser session, so
these cookies disappear as soon as you close your web browser.
Session cookies are necessary to identify your unique browser
session to manage and maintain state between pages, to enable
back button functionality, etc. Persistent cookies are retained
between browser sessions and expire when a specified date is
reached. They are necessary in situations such as where you want
the web browser to remember your username and password between
sessions or to allow shopping basket items to be retained between
sessions. When you delete your cookies - persistent cookies are
erased from your computer.
What
categories of cookie does Reed manage?
Reed categorises cookies based on their core function and the
kind of personal data the cookie stores (see the personal data
classfication table for
more specifics).
|
Site Feature |
Necessary for
the site to function as well as offering useful end-user
features such as identifying your session between page
requests, ensuring back button functionality works,
remembering your login details between sessions and
remembering items saved in your shopping basket, etc.
Both session and persistent cookie types are used to
provide useful site features. |
|
Analytics |
Utilise third
party analytics technologies to identify trends, track
browsing behaviour, optimise use of web sites, provide
preference related marketing and provide functionality
such as 'liking' an article, topic, etc. You can prevent
analytics from functioning by either (a) visiting the
relevant 3rd party analytics sites specified in the analytics
section of this
policy and opting out, (b) blocking cookies that belong
to these third parties. |
|
Not Applicable |
"Not
Applicable" indicates that the personal data in the applicable
classification
would not normally be stored in any cookie, but may be
collected by a web site and stored in a repository (e.g.
a database). The information collected and stored may be
attributed back to a unique individual via some other
"site feature" cookie such as a unique
identifier. |
