The LexisNexis Halsbury's Awards 2008 in association with BIALL
The LexisNexis Halsbury's Awards 2008 in association with BIALL
Dublin - 12 June
The Halsbury's Awards were established in 2007 by the BIALL Awards & Bursaries Committee and LexisNexis. They replaced the previously named BIALL Awards for Excellence that were presented in 2005 and 2006.
The Halsbury's Awards were conceived in order to recognise, celebrate and reward the dedicated performance and outstanding service given by legal information services, law libraries and those teams managing legal collections and resources. These awards are particularly unique as they are the only legal information service awards that recognise the value and importance of dedicated team work within our sector.
Last year marked the centenary of Halsbury's Laws of England, the definitive authority of the law of England and Wales. BIALL and LexisNexis chose to celebrate the centenary by establishing the LexisNexis Halsbury's Awards in association with BIALL for the Best Legal Information Services in the UK and Ireland. The inaugural presentations were made at a special event held at The Inner Temple on 16th October 2007.
Previous recipients of the awards:
2007:
Best Legal Information Service (Non-Commercial Sector): The Inner Temple Library
Best Legal Information Service (Commercial Sector): Addleshaw Goddard LLP, Manchester
Best London Legal Information Service (Commercial Sector): London: Sidley Austin LLP

2008: Award Procedure: the Categories and the nomination and adjudication processes:
The Halsbury's Awards are presented annually and the winners receive a trophy and a prize courtesy of LexisNexis. In 2008 the awards will be presented at the Informal Dinner as part of the BIALL Annual Conference which, this year, will take place in Dublin on 12 June.
Nominations are invited through advertisements and via the BIALL and LexisNexis websites and e-mail list. Nominations are not accepted at other times.
Nominations can be made by the service providers themselves, other legal information professionals who know and use the service or any legal professionals with experience of the service. In the commercial sector, where an organisation has more than one information service, nominations for the same firm can be made in different categories (i.e. a London office can be nominated for the London Legal Information Services (commercial) while an office in, for example, Manchester can also be nominated for the Regional Award).
The categories:
Best Legal Information Service (Non-Commercial Sector): this is a British and Irish nationwide award for those non-fee charging operations including the academic sector, government libraries and special libraries/information services.
Best Legal Information Service (Commercial Sector) this award is aimed at the commercial sector and includes Wales, Scotland and Ireland and all areas of England beyond the capital.
Best Legal Information Service (Commercial Sector) - London Only: this award is aimed at the London based Law Firm sector and other legal information services that operate commercial, fee charging, services within the capital. The reference to London can be identified as within the M25.
The adjudication panel will consider criteria such as:
- How the nominated information service has recognised particular issues and challenges facing them
- How the nominated information service has demonstrated excellence in dealing with these issues and challenges
- The contribution of the nominated information service to the legal information profession as a whole.
- The level of service of the nominated information service to other Legal Information Services and those working in the legal profession
The Award Committee, who adjudicate on the nominations, is composed of senior BIALL officers, the Chair of ABC and representatives from LexisNexis.
Closing Date for receipt of nominations:
The closing date for nominations for Halsbury's Awards 2008 is:
