Edith Neville School Reading Volunteers
The Reading and Language Partners schemes are organised jointly by the Camden Employment Business Partnership, a local school – Edith Neville and LexisNexis and has been running since 2002.
How it works: After a training session and a Criminal Records Bureau check LN volunteers visit the school to read with a child or to support their foreign language learning at lunchtime for half an hour, either weekly or fortnightly.
The commitment: We ask volunteers to commit to going for at least one term although most volunteers continue a lot longer. It’s something that can be very rewarding for both reader and volunteer.
Benefits to the School: Our volunteers make such a difference to the school, as volunteers can spend regular and valuable one to one time with the children, helping with reading and language as well as improving the children’s conversational skills by spending time talking and getting to know them.
Feedback from some of our current volunteers:
- “I would recommend the reading scheme to anyone…a complete break from the normal office routine and I feel that I am really making difference to the little girl I read with.”
- “The children look forward to seeing their reading partners so much; its gratifying knowing that you can make a real difference.”
